The Creative Process

Cass begins by creating a detailed line drawing using fine-tipped micron and fountain pens and techniques like hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling to define texture, depth, and form. She prefers to lean into imperfection and avoids forcing the lines to be straight and without flaw. In nature, nothing is perfectly straight or flawless—trees bend, rocks are jagged, and leaves have tiny tears or curves. These irregular, hand-drawn lines capture that same sense of life and movement. Embracing imperfection adds warmth and authenticity, reminding us that life—and art—is full of character, not perfection.

Once the ink has dried completely, watercolor is applied in transparent washes over the drawing. Muted tones are often used to capture a sense of nostalgia and to evoke memories and emotions in a gentle, almost dreamlike way. These quiet, faded colors resemble old photographs or distant memories—slightly blurred, not too bright, but full of feeling. This delicate palette allows the viewer to feel the passage of time and the warmth and longing for the familiar past.

The Inspiration

Cass finds inspiration in the ever changing natural world contrasted against the human need for familiarity and comfort. She works to approach the world with a beginner’s mind—open, curious, and free of judgment. Combining this fresh lens with a deep well of nostalgia, a longing for moments, places, or feelings that linger in memory she brings together the endless reminders of beauty in the ordinary and the warmth of what is known. It is her hope the viewer will be reminded that beauty can be found anywhere you look-even in the past.

Art that feels like home.
